Feedback Is Free

January 11, 2021

Feedback is free, which means you should question it. Things that are free have a hidden cost. The cost of feedback varies, but a common form is opinion. Opinions aren't inherently bad, but if unchecked against your own opinions they can lead you astray.

What someone thinks of something is their opinion. Feedback is rarely about facts, it’s about feel, which is great except when it’s taken as truth.

Early in my journey, I got some great feedback:

You’re going to get a lot of feedback from others. Remember that it’s just their opinion, and you need to make your own.

It's ironic how this is some of the most impactful feedback I've ever received.
